Savona can now consider a new jewel to be among its art treasures. Located in the very heart of the town centre, the Museo della Ceramica was created thanks to the hard work and close cooperation of Fondazione A. De Mari and the City of Savona. A stunning museum centre consecrated to the art of Ligurian ceramics, and in particular to the evolution of this tradition in the territories of Savona and Albisola. Displaying more than a hundred works of art, it narrates the history of artistic creation from the 15th century until today.
The exhibition will be presented to the public on Tuesday, 16th December 2014 with two events: at 5 pm an opening speech will be held at the Sala Consiliare of Palazzo Civico, followed by a visit of the Museo della Ceramica at Palazzo del Monte di Pietà.
The museum is situated in the magnificent Palazzo del Monte di Pietà, dating from the 15th century, and is now part of the properties of Fondazione A. De Mari. Formerly a private residence, in 1479, following the orders of Pope Sixtus IV della Rovere, the building became the seat of the Monte di Pietà. Today, at the end of a skilful and targeted restoration process, the halls of the palace can now host the stunning collections of Museo della Ceramica. Moreover, thanks to the restoration project, the four floors of the building which are home to the ceramic art collection will not only be reopened to the public for the first time in many years, but they will also be directly connected to the adjoining Pinacoteca Civica, the City Art Gallery of Savona. The Pinacoteca is housed in Palazzo Gavotti, currently property of the Municipality of Savona, and exhibits a selection of extraordinary historical paintings and artworks of famous contemporary artists, among them Picasso, Fontana, De Chirico, Magritte and Mirò.
Merging the two exhibitions into a unique museum centre, the Museo d’Arte of Palazzo Gavotti, a new and wonderful attraction has been created to further enrich the artistic and cultural heritage that Savona can offer to its visitors. A fascinating itinerary through paintings and ceramic artworks of international relevance, unfolding right alongside the wonderful churches and historical buildings populating the town centre of this beautiful Ligurian city.
To celebrate the opening of the Museo della Ceramica and to share this important moment with the citizens of Savona and with as many visitors as possible, admittance to the Museo d’Arte of Palazzo Gavotti (Pinacoteca Civica and Museo della Ceramica) will be free throughout the Christmas holiday period, until Tuesday 6th January. Moreover, during this period, two days of special events will take place:
