Thanks to the interest received, the exhibition Lam et les Magiciens de la Mer. Totem, figure e segni primordiali nella ceramica di Albisola tra gli anni ’50 e ’70’, at the Savona Ceramics Museum, is extended until October, 9th 2023. Until September, 10th it will still be possible to visit the section of the exhibition set up at the MuDA Exhibition Center in Albissola Marina.
The first Italian retrospective dedicated to Wifredo Lam’s ceramic work brings the main Cuban artist of the twentieth century into dialogue with other protagonists of the fertile season that between the 1950s and 1970s made the area between Savona and Albisole the fulcrum of artistic ceramics international: from Lucio Fontana to Enrico Baj, from Giuseppe Capogrossi to Roberto Crippa, from Asger Jorn to Maria Papa Rostkowska and Eva Sørensen.
There are over 70 works on display, many of which are unprecedented: plates, vases, sculptures and panels, from the museums of Savona and Albisola, from galleries, collections, private archives and from the Wifredo Lam Estate in Paris. The exhibition is structured according to four thematic itineraries inspired by the macro-themes Totems, Animals, Metamorphoses and Signs. The insights are entrusted to the full-bodied catalog published by Electa. The story – private and professional – of Lam’s life is summed up in an exciting video that welcomes the visitor at the entrance to the Savona museum, on loan from the Tate Modern in London.
Lam et les Magiciens de la Mer is a project curated by Luca Bochicchio, Stella Cattaneo and Daniele Panucci, promoted by the Fondazione Museo della Ceramica and the Municipality of Albissola Marina, with the support of the Fondazione De Mari, the scientific contribution of the Lam Estate and the patronage of the Museo Nacional de la Cerámica Contemporánea Cubana, of the Oficina del Historiador, and of the Municipalities of Savona and Albisola Superiore.
